Common Causes of Kidney and Back Pain
If you’ve watched my previous videos, you know that kidney pain is uncommon and that most back pain is caused by musculoskeletal issues.. Common causes of kidney pain include kidney stones and infection. Less likely are large kidney cysts from polycystic kidney disease.
It is not always easy to tell if your back pain is from your kidneys or from other common causes.

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.
The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and YouTube sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 YouTube subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

So low back pain is quite normal. In fact 80 percent of us will experience low back pain at some point in our lives. The vast majority of us will also go onto experience some type of lumbar disk herniation and/or pathology. We consider these things to be normal and actually like wrinkles on the inside as we age we get wrinkles on our exterior. We also get wrinkles on the inside which are completely normal throughout life. When looking at preventing and treating low back pain, we must start at the joint above and below the low back. In most cases the low back is the site of compensation and not the cause of lower back pain. By keeping your mid-back and your hips mobile, that allows the low back to remain stable and avoid injury. To properly access and treat low back pain, we must first identify the cause of your lower back pain. In most cases the low back is likely compensating for a joint that’s not moving well. But through a thorough assessment we can identify what segment is not moving well and prescribe the appropriate corrective exercise to reengage your proper muscle activation and/or mobility to treat. By keeping the hips and the mid-back loose and identifying which one is contributing to your symptoms we can help take away your low back pain and keep it from coming back.

In TCM, there is a harmony between Heart and Kidney. Heart Fire (yang) goes downwards to Kidney to warm Kidney Water (yin), so Kidney Water is not too cold; Kidney Water goes upwards to nourish Heart so Heart Fire is not too hot. Thus, a balance is created between Water and Fire, in other words, between yin and yang.
Having heart disease does not mean you will develop kidney disease, but it may increase your risk. Of all the shared risk factors, years of poorly controlled high blood pressure or high blood sugar levels pose the greatest threat. And if your kidney function begins to worsen, you might not be aware that it’s happening. Symptoms are rare.
Now, anti-histamines, they are one of the most safest medicines which are available in the market and most of them are quite safe. Patients have been using it for years together without causing much of side effects. But any tablet, for a matter, even a simple paracetamol can cause side effects. So you have to be really careful when you are using it, and you should do it only under the guidance or the supervision of an ENT doctor or a doctor who has given you those anti-histamines. In any case most of the anti-histamines have side effects which are categorized into acute and chronic. The acute side effect can be sedation, you have loss of concentration and you feel little weak and tired. Usually you get used to it in a couple of days. There can also be little dryness, you feel itching in the throat and stuff like that, that’s very common. The chronic side effects can range from dryness in the throat, you may end up with weight loss or sometimes even weight gain, you may end up with constipation, drowsiness which may even prolong. But these are all very rare side effects. Nowadays we have the modern generation anti-histamines like the levocetrizine or the fexofenadine. These anti-histamines have got relatively less amount of side effects. In any case, whenever we are taking any anti-histamines and especially if you are taking for a long time make sure that you will consult your doctor who will have a look at of all the body functions. He will say if your liver and other functions are perfectly normal and if otherwise you have no problem in the body like no sugar, no hypertension, or any other problem, then there won’t be any problem in taking anti-histamines.

Upper and mid-back pain is unusual because these vertebrae are less mobile than those in the neck and low back. Upper back pain is not common, but it can cause significant discomfort.

Today’s video shows a technique that can be used to stretch the low back and reduce tightness.
The set up in this video is very similar to how physical therapist and chiropractors position a patient’s body when performing a low back or lumbar manipulation.
This stretch involves pre-positioning the hip in flexion and rotating the spine by pulling on the arm. Then, pressure is applied to the shoulder and hip until a stretch is felt in the low back region.
This video is not intended to teach you how to manipulate your partner’s spine. Spinal manipulations should only be performed by rehabilitation professionals who have been trained in these techniques. If your partner experiences pain during this stretch, stop and choose a different option.
My upcoming book contains exercise programs for the most common low back issues. These programs also include a variety of mobility exercises that you can do on your own. Click the link to learn more about my book and pre-order it on Amazon. https://a.co/d/0g8uPRE
